Gas credit cards? Buyer beware!
Some gas stations are charging an extra 6-8 cents more per gallon when you use gas credit cards to pay for your gas compared to using gas without notifying the customer of the price difference! This seems to be happening more in new-jersey (a full service only state) more than anywhere else, but it is definitely not worth the extra money to not have to pump your own gas using gas credit cards, especially with gas prices headed toward $4/gallon.
The extra charge for using gas credit cards has been initiated by the station owners themselves, rather than being a mandatory requirement of the oil companies, and it is unclear why they have decided to do this, considering what is happening to gas prices. It is the regular gas credit cards price that should be the one advertised on the large signs, and not the discounted price.
The price difference between cash and the extra fee for the gas credit cards pretty much eliminates any cash back bonuses one receives for using gas credit cards, making it much more difficult to determine which method of payment is costing less in the long run and since gas prices vary daily, which is the best gas station to use when making purchases with gas credit cards.
